Lou Piniella, manager of the Chicago Cubs, will retire at the end of this season reports the Chicago Tribune. He has managed five teams since his debut in 1986 including the Yankees, Reds, Mariners, and former Devil Rays. Piniella won his only World Series title in his first season managing the Reds, however he arguably had more success in Seattle (with Griffey Jr., A-Rod, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, Jay Buhner, etc.). He was named AL Manager of the Year twice in '95 and '01, losing the American League Division Championship series in each despite winning 116 regular season games in 2001. In his four years managing the Cubs (307-271), Piniella took his club to the postseason only once in 2008 after winning the NL Central, but promptly lost three straight to the Dodgers in the NLDS. As of Monday, the Cubs were 42-52 and 10.5 games out of first place in the Central. His managerial record is 1826-1691 good for a .519 win pct.
