New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner passed away today at his home in Tampa due to a massive heart attack, he was 80 years-old. The media has been flooded with coverage so here's a list of highlights from some of those stories and articles. Enjoy:

  • Owner of the New York Yankees since 1973
  • Longest tenured owner in MLB history
  • Amassed 11 AL Pennants and 7 World Series titles
  • Known as "The Boss"
  • Bought the Yanks from CBS for $10 million
  • Yankee franchise's current net worth = $1.6 billion (third highest behind Manchester United, $1.8 billion, and the Dallas Cowboys, $1.65 billion)
  • Served as an assistant football coach at Northwestern and Purdue in the mid-1950's
  • Changed Yankees managers 20 times in first 23 seasons with the team
  • Suspended from MLB for 2 years in 1974 after felony and misdemeanor charges were brought against him due to illegal contributions to Richard Nixon
  • Banned from baseball for life in 1990 after paying a gambler $40,000 to dig up dirt on outfielder Dave Winfield (whom he later granted the largest free agent contract in history, $18.2 million over 10 years). He was reinstated in 1993.
  • Was once quoted as saying he was against free agency as it might "ruin baseball". Also quoted saying he would be a mostly hands-off owner, and compared owning the Yankees to owning the Mona Lisa
  • Has a high school named after him in Lutz, Florida due to his philanthropic efforts in that community
  • Only stepped foot in New Yankee Stadium four times
